For JP, the decision to stop smoking came down to two important things: her health and her finances. Living with COPD, she was finding it increasingly difficult to breathe, and having recently retired, the rising cost of cigarettes was becoming another worry.
Having successfully stopped smoking for a year in the past, JP knew she could do it. But this time, she wanted to quit for good.
With support from Smokefree Sheffield, JP has done just that – and the difference it has made to her life has been incredible.
Before starting her quit journey, JP admits her confidence was low, giving herself just a 25–30% chance of succeeding. But regular support from her stop smoking advisor, alongside nicotine patches and a vape to help manage cravings, made all the difference.
“The support I had made me look at stopping long term, not just for now. My advisor listened and supported me, and having the same person to talk to throughout the programme was so important.”
Encouragement from her family also played a huge part in keeping her motivated, especially as she began noticing improvements in her health.
Now, JP can walk further, spend more time out of the house and enjoy activities that previously left her struggling for breath. Even a recent holiday to the East Coast was a completely different experience.
“I didn’t think my lungs would feel any better, but they do since I stopped smoking. My breathing is a lot easier, and I’m not coughing stuff up in the morning anymore. It really is the case that it’s never too late. I never believed that, but it is true.”
And it’s not just her health that has improved. JP loves having a fresher-smelling home, being a positive example to her grandchildren and feeling more optimistic about the future.
“I see a longer future, which I never had before. I feel better in myself and more positive.”
JP’s message to anyone thinking about quitting is simple:
“The main thing is go for it because you can do it. The benefits are well worth it.”
JP’s story is a wonderful reminder that, whatever your age or how long you've smoked, quitting can make a real difference to your health, confidence and quality of life.
