"I smoked for 22 years before I finally managed to quit. I actually stopped for three years at one point, but life got in the way, and I ended up relapsing. It was disappointing, but instead of giving up on myself, I decided to try again. My health and my children are the biggest reasons I wanted to stop for good. I want to be the best version of myself, not just for them, but for me too.
Since quitting, I’ve noticed such a huge difference in my fitness. Exercise feels easier, I have more energy, and I’m seeing better results much more quickly than I did before. It’s amazing how much your body can recover when you give it the chance. Seeing those improvements has been so motivating and rewarding, and it reminds me every day why I made the decision to stop smoking.
I used nicotine patches and inhalators to help me through the cravings, and they really made a difference. Having that extra support helped me stay focused on my goal, especially during the more challenging moments.
One of the things that keeps me going is knowing that I’m setting a positive example for my children. I don’t want them to see smoking as normal, and I’m proud that I’m showing them healthier habits instead. Knowing they are watching and learning from me gives me even more determination to stay smoke free.
If you’re struggling to quit, my advice would be to remind yourself why you wanted to stop in the first place. For me, it’s my children and my health, but everyone’s reason is different. Hold on to that reason, especially on the difficult days. Quitting isn’t always easy, and setbacks can happen, but every day without a cigarette is a step in the right direction. Be kind to yourself, keep going, and remember that the rewards are worth it. If I can do it after 22 years of smoking, then you can too."
