Smoking and Teenagers

24.6% of all high school students had used tobacco at least once in the last 30 days. Most of these teenagers smoke every day. 30 days might not seem much, but in 30 years’ time, an estimated 5.6 million of these children will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease if they carry on in the same pattern.

If you’re a teenager reading this, you most likely won’t take notice. This is because most of the younger generation do not realise their own mortality. Just because you are younger and fitter, you are not invincible. When you hear about people who die from lung cancer and heart disease from smoking you cannot turn a blind eye- this could be you. Smoking does not go easy on you just because you are younger- it takes NO prisoners.

If you’re a parent reading this, educate yourself on the facts so you can teach your children from a young age the dangers of smoking. Take an active role in your child’s life before it is too late, get the inside information on what the tobacco market is doing to your teen and point it out to them- don’t let them be dragged down by smoking. Talking about smoking ahead of time will give your teen an opportunity to make the decisions ahead of time. Then when he is offered cigarettes he will already have the answer.

What about if it’s too late? Support your teenager and guide them in the right direction to stop the habit. If you are supporting your child they are more likely to give up. Let them be honest! Our Yorkshire Smokefree service is here to help you whatever age you are. Our services are free, friendly and flexible and you will always have access to our specialist advisors who have helped 1000s of people to go smoke-free.
