The stop smoking service in Barnsley proudly celebrates 25 years of helping residents quit smoking and improve their health. Since its launch in October 1999 with just four staff members in a small office, the stop smoking service has grown into a vital community resource offering a range of support options across Barnsley.

The service began with group sessions held in a single room on Regent Street and has since expanded to include one-to-one support in various locations, telephone advice, and an interactive website. Over the years, the service has moved to larger venues, including a quit shop in a charity store and later to Eldon Street in Barnsley, before settling at Kendray Hospital. Now the service is run as part of Yorkshire Smokefree and covers other areas including Doncaster, Calderdale, Sheffield, and Wakefield. The service operates under South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Amanda Longdon, service manager at Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley, said: “The stop smoking service proudly marks its 25th anniversary, celebrating a legacy of innovation and community health improvement. Over the last 25 years, we have evolved from traditional face-to-face support to offering multi-channel assistance including telephone guidance and online help via our website to meet the changing needs of Barnsley residents. Led by a team of friendly, experienced advisers and specialists, the service remains committed to helping people quit smoking for good.”

Amanda further adds: “Quitting is one of the best decisions smokers can make for their health. It may take several attempts, but with the right support, success becomes far more achievable. People don’t need to quit alone; our service is here to help every step of the way. It’s been incredible to witness how many lives have been transformed since we started. Every person who walks through our door is treated with care, compassion, and commitment by a team dedicated to supporting people to quit. This milestone isn’t just about numbers—it’s about the thousands of personal journeys we’ve supported along the way.”

On average, the service has received around 3,000 referrals annually over the past three years, reflecting the strong demand and ongoing need for stop smoking support in Barnsley.

Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley continues its mission to improve public health by providing an accessible, effective smoking cessation service to help Barnsley residents live healthier, smoke-free lives.
