Jan

Jan was referred to Yorkshire Smokefree Calderdale after an appointment with her respiratory nurse. Jan was told it was in her best interest to give up smoking, since she had been diagnosed with a chronic lung condition called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, commonly known as COPD.

Jan chose telephone support with Yorkshire Smokefree and she's been working with our advisors to help her establish her quit using the prescription medication, Champix. Jan quit on 10th December 2018 and is still smokefree today!

Since her quit date, Jan has kept herself busy by taking up knitting which has been instrumental in keeping her hands busy and her mind distracted from cravings. Jan plans to donate her knitted newborn baby clothes to Calderdale Maternity Unit, she's done a fantastic job of them.

Jan spoke very highly of the support she received from Yorkshire Smokefree and it's helped her stay quit after years of smoking. The team are extremely proud of Jan too! We can't wait to see what else she knits!

The main symptoms of COPD are:

  • Increasing breathlessness, particularly when you're active
  • A persistent chesty cough with phlegm (often dismissed as a 'smokers cough')
  • Frequent chest infections
  • Persistent wheezing

Without treatment, COPD symptoms usually get slowly worse. There may also be periods when they get suddenly worse, known as a flare-up or exacerbation.
