Dean made a decision to quit smoking after being diagnosed with stage 2 COPD – a bit of a wake-up call that made him realise he needed to take control of his health.

With the help of stop smoking medication Varenicline and regular face-to-face appointments with his Yorkshire Smokefree Wakefield Stop Smoking Advisor, Julia, he has managed to break the habit that had affected his health and fitness.

Dean used to be a keen runner in his younger days and since quitting he’s rediscovered his passion. Joining his local gym has become a big part of his routine and he is now able to run two miles in 19 minutes and 13 seconds – with a personal goal of cutting that down to 18 minutes!

His renewed energy has had a huge impact on his home life. Between him and his partner they have five children, one of whom is severely autistic and needs extra care and support. Dean said by quitting smoking it has given him the stamina and focus he needs to be more present and active with his family. He can now chase after the kids and join in on their activities without getting out of breath.

Well done Dean, you've done incredibly well! Enjoy those runs in the fresh air and those memory-making moments with the family! The team here in Wakefield are proud of you.
