Hi, my name is Peter, and I have been smoking over 30 years. The reason for me contacting Yorkshire Smokefree Wakefield is that I have been diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney disease and I am waiting for a transplant. I knew I had to stop smoking and was advised by my consultant that quitting would benefit me in terms of my treatment and moving further up the wating list. I never thought for a minute I could do this as I have tried to quit several times before, but, had more motivation this time and knew I had to as my condition was deteriorating quickly. It was a reality check for me!
I stopped immediately with the help from using the patches and did not need any more NRT after 3 weeks. My advisor was a great support, and I could not have achieved this without her support. The hospital is so pleased with me and the treatment is going well, and I am due to have my operation on 18th July!
Another bonus is that with the money that I have saved, I have been able to treat myself to some new fishing tackle. My friends have been taking me as some days are a real struggle for me. I could not have done this without the help from the service and a massive thank you to my advisor who has encouraged me all the way on my journey.
