Gerald had been smoke-free for 9 years, before starting again. He approached our service wanting to finally quit for good. He's now officially smoke-free again (verified by regular carbon monoxide readings). At his last session with his stop smoking advisor Barnsley, we did a quick Q&A with Gerald and here is what he had to say:

What were your reasons for wanting to stop smoking?

Main reason for quitting was my health, as I stared smoking when I was a teenager.

Have you stopped smoking previously?

I tried quitting 9 years ago, and had stopped until 9 months ago.

Before your first appointment, did you believe you would be successful?

Yes, I was confident as I had managed to do it in the past.

Did you use stop smoking medication to help you quit and what did you use?

The Quick Mist spray worked well and I'm happy that I chose that.

Apart from medication, what else helped you to quit and stay smokefree?

Will power and self-belief. Also the support of the service.

What do you like the most about being a non-smoker / quit?

I'm feeling healthier, better in myself, and I like the fact that I'm not smelling of smoke.

Has your health improved since your quit and if so, in what ways?

Yes, I'm breathing easier and I have more energy. Also my wellbeing has improved.

What have you found helpful whilst accessing Yorkshire Smokefree service?

All the experience of the service has been great, and the fact that you were there to support me was reassuring.
I liked the weekly phone call with my advisor and it helped me stay focussed. I also found it helped my self confidence!

Could you give us a quote about your experience of becoming smokefree that may help others to take the same step?

“Yes! Once you stop, stick with that self determination to stay quit”.
