Sandra decided to stop smoking with the support of our stop smoking team in Barnsley for several reasons. Improving her health was a major motivation, but the rising cost of cigarettes also played a big part. She explained that she no longer liked the smell of smoke and felt it was time to make a positive change.

Although Sandra had successfully quit smoking for three months in the past, difficult circumstances in her life led her to start smoking again. This time, however, she felt determined to stop for good.

At her first appointment, Sandra admitted she felt “50/50” about whether she would succeed, but she was willing to give quitting her best shot. To support her quit attempt, she used the Switzz Pro Vape through the "Swap to Stop" scheme, which she described as a real helping hand. Receiving the vape free of charge was a huge benefit, and she also found her one-to-one appointments in Goldthorpe extremely supportive and encouraging.

Sandra said staying focused has been one of the most important factors in helping her remain smokefree. Although the thought of buying cigarettes occasionally crosses her mind, she no longer acts on those thoughts and they quickly pass.

One moment that really highlighted how much things had changed for Sandra was when she realised she could not find a lighter to light her candles. In the past, she would always have had a lighter close by because of smoking.

Since quitting, Sandra says she feels like she has more freedom, more money, and more control over her life. She used to spend around £200 each month on cigarettes, but she has now managed to save enough money to book a holiday with her friends. She also enjoys being able to treat herself without constantly checking her banking app.

Sandra no longer experiences the stress of making sure she always has cigarettes with her before leaving the house. While out walking her dog, someone recently asked her for a light, and she said it felt amazing to reply that she did not smoke anymore. She loved being able to say it out loud.

Her health has improved significantly since quitting. Sandra says her breathing is much better and she no longer has the rattling feeling on her chest. She also struggles with sleep due to fibromyalgia, and in the past she would wake during the night and go outside for a cigarette. Now, instead of smoking, she is able to settle herself back to sleep much more easily.

Quitting smoking has also given Sandra more time for herself. She says she can now spend time doing her hair and enjoying small daily routines, rather than constantly stopping for a cigarette. Another thing she has noticed is how much nicer everything smells now that she no longer smokes.

Sandra’s story shows that although quitting smoking is not always easy, with determination, support, and the right tools, positive change is possible.
