November is Mouth Cancer Action Month and Yorkshire Smokefree Kirklees has joined forces with the maxillofacial team at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to raise awareness of mouth cancer and help early detection and prevention.
In the UK, more than 6,700 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year. The disease has grown by a third in the last decade – and remains one of very few cancers which are predicted to increase further in the coming years.
Earlier this week, Joy and Shabana from Yorkshire Smokefree offered free carbon monoxide readings, support and advice around stopping smoking and smokeless tobacco use at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. They then directed people to have a free mouth screening at the maxillofacial unit.
Early detection and treatment of mouth cancer can increase the survival chance from 50% to 90%. Mouth cancer kills I person every 3 hours in the UK because of late detection, so it’s so important to spot the signs and take action!
