Yorkshire Smokefree Kirkless has been working in partnership with Debra Donovan from the IAPT service to deliver taster sessions in Mindfulness throughout our Kirklees stop smoking groups. The sessions have been well received by clients.
Mindfulness also allows us to become more aware of the stream of thoughts and feelings that we experience. This lets us stand back from our thoughts and start to see their patterns. Gradually, we can train ourselves to notice when our thoughts are taking over and realise that thoughts are simply 'mental events' that do not have to control us. When going through the quit process mindfulness can be a great tool for coping with cravings and as relapse prevention (NHS Choices, 2016).
